[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]Helium - Hole In The Ground [1993]
Rounding out Wild Flag week by revisiting old friend Helium. This song was uber-featured in the uber-uncomfortable 90s movie that yet I COULD NOT STOP WATCHING when I was an uncomfortable teenager, All Over Me.
Fun Fact(s): Helium was originally called Chupa, and before Mary Timony stepped in, Mary Lou Lord was the lead singer. Also the original line-up included Jason Hatfield, brother of Juliana Hatfield, who you might remember from the one bad episode of My So-Called Life ever.

I saw Wild Flag cover this song last night and it made me like Television in a new way that I hadn’t before, but that I had always wanted to. So thanks, Wild Flag. Now that you’ve done all this other stuff for me could you please come over sometime and help me paint my dining room?

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]Sleater-Kinney - Everything [2006]
This is the last song Sleater-Kinney ever released, and I think you can really hear some WILD FLAG amoebas crawling out the primordial soup, or something.

First Listen: WILD FLAG, ‘WILD FLAG’
Hear ‘WILD FLAG’ In Its Entirety
[40 min 9 sec]
Out Sept. 13
Here is your assignment for the day: listen to this obsessively.
Current favorite minute of this 40 minute record is 2:00-3:02 on the first track, “Romance.” I might listen to this so obsessively today that I’ll put all of the minutes in order by favoriteness.

Janet hates slow songs. She hates listening to them and hates playing them, so if Mary or I bring in something too slow or sensitive, Janet will just bang the shit out of the drums until our sensitivity is obliterated.

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]WILD FLAG - Future Crimes [2011]
WILD FLAG (I feel like I have to write this band name in all caps, all the time) have only played a handful of shows and have no studio recordings yet, and for a “supergroup” there’s something mysterious about them, which I love. This is from their third-ever show. I don’t know if this is the real name of the song.
I just heard that their March 6th Philly show is sold out! I hope you ordered your ticket 3 months ago like I did.

WILD FLAG at Northern, November 10, 2010.
This is my first time hearing WILD FLAG. After all the delightful anticipation, this totally does not disappoint. I’m super stoked about this band. Carrie Brownstein is still my rock ‘n roll mentor, my punk rock dream come true.

Sleater-Kinney, Helium, & The Minders = WILD FLAG
“I have no desire to play music unless I need music. And as readers of Monitor Mix might know, I have very little desire to even listen to music by players who don’t seem to need it, to want it. Otherwise, what is the point? About a year ago I started to need music again, and so I called on my friends and we joined as a band.” — Carrie Brownstein
I’m pretty stoked on this news.
