I’ve been meaning to make an abridged mix of some of my favorite cover/original pairings for a long time now, but it was this morning’s discovery of a Bruce Springsteen / Electrelane pairing that really put a fire behind my dream and caused me to recklessly abandon my office work (right before a meeting with my boss!) to put this together:

I made another mix at 8tracks: Triple Meters
All of these songs can be waltzed to:

Loretta Lynn - Trouble On The Line
The Go-Betweens - The Devil’s Eye
The Felice Brothers - Walk A While
The Child Ballads - Blackbird Trax
Charles Leo Gebhardt IV - King Of The Mountain

The Divine Comedy - With Whom To Dance [Cover: The Magnetic Fields]

The Stanley Brothers - Angel Band
Johnny Bond - Birmingham Jail
Jimmy Heap - Dessau Waltz
Jan Garber’s Orchestra - Lazy Lou’siana Moon
Tony Murena & P. Fontaine - Pepee [Instrumental]
The Weavers - Goodnight Irene
Waltzing is easy and great fun, especially if you don’t care about messing up.
The class act over at I’d Have You Anytime just whipped up this spectacular mix called “If I were around in the 1930s,” which is chock full of some of the best songs of the early 20th century. I love the juxtaposition of American blues, French balladeering, and big band swing. She aptly advises to “enjoy with a cocktail and dusty shoes.”
So, tie up those laces, I’ll fix the drinks.

New mix up at 8tracks, inspired by the necessity of burning a mix CD in the event our rental car didn’t have an ipod hookup. God I miss the time limitations of CDs and cassettes. My playlists get so out of hand without them.
Anyway here is the tracklist:
April Smith & The Great Picture Show - Colors
The Generationals - When They Fight, They Fight
Them - Could You, Would You
The Kinks - Just Can’t Go To Sleep
Cinderella - Baby, Baby (I Still Love You)
Mates Of State - Sleep The Clock Around [Belle & Sebastian cover]
The Clean - Big Soft Punch
Pointed Sticks - What Do You Want Me To Do?
X - The New World
Neko Case & Her Boyfriends - Guided By Wire
Justin Townes Earle - I Don’t Care
Big Star - Thirteen
Lightning Dust - Antonia Jane
Regina Spektor - Folding Chair
Allo Darlin’ - If Loneliness Was Art
Earl-Jean - I’m Into Something Good
Wilson Pickett - Don’t Fight It
Buddy Holly - Fool’s Paradise
Bo Diddley - Diddley Daddy
Aretha Franklin - The Weight [The Band cover]
Etta James - The Wallflower (Roll With Me, Henry)
Toots & The Maytals - Never You Change
George Harrison - What Is Life
The Pogues - All The Tears That I Cried [feat. Kirsty MacColl]
Holly & The Italians - I Wanna Go Home
I hope you will enjoy it! Sorry for the cross-posting— these 8tracks jawns are the only things I ever cross-post so I feel ok about it.
I don’t quite understand why I am feeling so drawn to haunted proms. I think there were just so many references to creepy 1950s teenagers in my formative years. Stand By Me, and episodes of Are You Afraid Of The Dark? and My So-Called Life come to mind.
On the other hand, when I think about the bizarre number of songs from that era about car accidents, and their outrageously excessive use of reverb, I wonder how somebody could NOT be drawn to a haunted prom!
1. Santo & Johnny - Sleep Walk [Instrumental]
2. Richie Valens - Donna
3. The Crescendos - Oh Julie
4. Jody Reynolds - Endless Sleep
5. Conway Twitty - It’s Only Make Believe
6. Robin Luke - Susie Darlin’
7. Gene Chandler - Duke of Earl
8. Shelley Fabares - Johnny Angel
9. The Shangri-Las - Maybe [Cover: The Chantels]

12. Skyliners - Since I Don’t Have You
13. Little Anthony & The Imperials - Tears On My Pillow
