Etta James just died; say it ain’t so.
I don’t even know which song to post here, as I have never been able to narrow down an absolute favorite track. “Almost Persuaded” and “I’d Rather Go Blind” and “All I Could Do Was Cry” have similar tones but express such acutely different heartache, a fact truest to people who’ve felt that sort of thing before. “Tough Mary” and “Tell Mama” invented modern pop singer ‘tude. “Something’s Got A Hold On Me” and “Pushover” are two sides of the same blistering, whirlwind, salad day romance. And then there’s “At Last,” you know, that song that might be one of the most romantic songs of all time.
On a sad day it’s nice to linger on each of these songs a few more times and appreciate them just as they are, and in their now-this-is-really-really-over way.
